OSMOTIC ENGINE
A new renewable sustainable source of power.

OSMOSIS occurs naturally in nature, it is... "the movement of a solvent through a semipermeable membrane separating two solutions of different concentrations." The pressure created is enough to power a turbine and make electricity - this is proven OSMOTIC POWER STATION. Wherever fresh water, a river meets the salt of the ocean Osmotic Power is released. This can be a continuous 24 hour renewable and sustainable energy source, as long as the fresh water river never stops flowing into the sea.

To harness this energy and make an engine the process needs to become circular by continuously re-using the same fresh water and salty water. As the fresh water mixes with salt water, it becomes diluted salt water. By removing the salt from this mixture re-makes a new fresh water stream, and by putting the salt back into the salt stream allows the process to repeat. The catch is... the energy it takes to remove the salt must be less than the energy it makes. This is achievable with the right semipermeable membrane and the right salt solution.

Desalinating sea water with Reverse Osmosis requires a lot of energy - as much energy as Osmosis produces. Since Osmosis relies on solutions of different concentrations, alternative to sea salt, like sugars, require less energy to separate from water. Wapsec Research is actively involved in developing such an engine.
